The Northern Red-Bellied Snake (Storeria Occipitomaculata) is a usually a docile snake that occurs throughout WV in wooded areas and reaches a size of usually less than 16 inches in length. This species may have a light brown stripe down it's back, 3 distinct yellowish spots on its head, and a red belly. An estimated 10% of these snakes occurring in WV have grey or black bellies. The species feeds on slugs and other invertebrates and during reproduction may produce as many as 13 young around 3 inches long. While not too prevalent in the pet trade I would rate this one as a decent candidate for domestication.
